You slept for eight hours. You went to bed on time. You did everything right. And yet you woke up feeling like you barely rested at all.
The problem might not be how long you slept. It might be how deeply.
Deep sleep is the most restorative phase of the sleep cycle. It is the period when your body repairs tissue, strengthens immunity, and consolidates memory. Without enough of it, no amount of total sleep time will leave you feeling truly restored.
Here is what deep sleep actually is, why your body depends on it, and what you can do to get more of it.
Understanding the Sleep Cycle
Sleep is not a single, uniform state. Each night, your brain cycles through distinct stages, each with a different purpose. A complete cycle takes roughly 90 minutes, and most people move through four to six cycles per night.
- Stage 1 (N1): A brief transition lasting one to five minutes. Your muscles relax, your heart rate slows, and your brain begins producing alpha and theta waves. You can be woken easily.
- Stage 2 (N2): Light sleep that accounts for about half your total sleep time. Your body temperature drops, eye movement stops, and your brain produces short bursts of activity called sleep spindles. These spindles play a role in learning and memory.

The amount you need changes with age. People under 30 typically get about two hours of deep sleep per night. By age 65, that number can drop to 30 minutes or less.
